East Yorkshire Judo Academy was founded in 2001 by senior international and Commonwealth medallist Daniel Kissenisky, along with fellow coaches Steve Shepherd and Dave Platten.

All of our coaches are BJA qualified, DBS checked, and hold First Aid and Child Protection certificates.
Daniel Kissenisky
5th Dan, Head Coach, Level 2
With over 45 years of Judo experience, I have completed for Great Britain at junior and senior levels, former England pathway coach and winner of the Hull Daily mail coach of the year award.
Steven Shepherd
4th Dan, Senior Coach, Level 2
First walked on a tatami in 1977 as a beginner up to 4th dan. Competed at all levels before going in to coaching. Coaching at all levels from beginners to international competitors.
Bob Parker
1st Dan, Coach, Level 2, Club Welfare Officer, Secretary
Bob started Judo in his 30’s. Over a number of years, he worked his way up to 1st Dan. He is a level 2 coach and has current 1st Aid, Safeguarding, DBS and a time to listen certificates.
Gareth Cranmer
1st Dan, Coach, Level 2
Started Judo at age 10 and began coaching in his teens, has competed at national level, achieved 1st dan and everyone’s favourite Uke.
David Platten
5th Dan, Assistant Coach
I started Judo 52 years ago and have achieved my 5th dan. Previously, I was on the area committee, a senior examiner, Yorkshire & Humberside squad coach and a club coach. I competed at all levels, however, my biggest achievement is making some of my best and longest friends.
David Lamb
2nd Dan Assistant Coach
David started Judo age 5 and 35 years later is still an active Judoka. A former British junior and senior international, Lamby as he’s known in Judo circles, competed all over the world with a memorable highlight when he lost his contact lens live on Israeli TV when fighting in a world grand prix event.
Karl Marrow
2nd Dan, Assistant Coach
Karl began his Judo journey as a child age 6 to 11 and returned to it as an adult, achieving the grade of 2nd dan. He now has 30 years of experience and has a great break fall.
Madeline Kissenisky
1st Dan Assistant Coach
I started Judo at primary school, year 2, and carried on in to the EYJA club. I now represent England internationally and I am on the junior Great Britain team. I train with the club weekly. I now work with our young Judo players coming through from Primary School to Seniors.
